DJI has launched the second generation of its Romo robot vacuum, featuring more powerful suction, improved obstacle navigation, and a new local-only data mode designed to strengthen privacy protections following security issues with the original model.

What happened
DJI introduced the Romo 2 series, the latest iteration of its robotic vacuum cleaners, featuring significant upgrades in navigation, cleaning efficiency, and privacy. Two models were unveiled: the transparent P2 and the opaque A2. Both share enhanced capabilities to detect and avoid obstacles as small as 2mm, including challenging surfaces such as mirrors and glass. The robovacs also feature two legs underneath that enable climbing over steps up to 4cm high and crossing multiple small thresholds between rooms.
Performance improvements include a higher suction power of up to 36,000Pa on carpets and new brush and mop arms designed to clean hard-to-reach places like sideboards and under furniture. Additionally, DJI claims an 85% reduction in operational noise, making the Romo 2 significantly quieter than its predecessor.
Why it matters
The original Romo vacuum faced serious security flaws that exposed sensitive homeowner data and allowed potential remote control of the device, damaging user trust. Although patches addressed most vulnerabilities, confidence in the product remained shaken. Addressing these concerns, DJI introduced a Local Data Mode in the Romo 2 that completely severs the vacuum’s app connection from the internet, preventing any data syncing or cloud storage of images and camera feeds.
Users can also entirely disable the vacuum’s camera and microphone, as well as delete any stored data, offering better control over privacy. DJI markets this new mode as an industry standard for home robotics, and plans to extend this privacy-focused update to the original Romo model. This approach aims to restore consumer confidence in DJI’s home robotics line while addressing growing demand for robust data protection features.
What to watch next
DJI has not announced pricing or a release date yet for the Romo 2 series. The Local Data Mode feature is expected to roll out in Q4 of 2026. Despite the announcement at IFA alongside the Osmo 360 II camera, DJI is unlikely to bring the Romo 2 to the US market due to ongoing regulatory restrictions and a recent FCC ban on foreign-made robot vacuums.
Market watchers should monitor how DJI leverages these new privacy and navigation capabilities in other regions and whether the enhanced data protections become a new baseline for home robotics safety standards. Additionally, observing user reception of the Romo 2’s balance between performance and privacy will provide insight into evolving consumer priorities in smart home devices.
