Starting in July and continuing through the industry’s annual meeting in Colorado Springs, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and head of global energy policy John McCarrick have been pitching Daybreak, their AI cybersecurity offering, to leading US electric utilities. Meetings included executives from Duke Energy, Exelon, Southern Company, NextEra Energy, Dominion Energy, and Southern California Edison—companies serving over 50% of the US population.
Daybreak builds on OpenAI’s existing $1 billion commitment targeting water utilities and community banks, aiming now to protect electric grid operators from sophisticated autonomous cyberattacks.
